Rotaract Club of Kantipur is organizing a fundraiser Dinner & dance party at Bawarchi Food courtyard, Naxal on Jan 23rd. The proceeds of the program will go to the Library being established by Child Watawaran Center Nepal (CWCN) at Dhumbarahi which educates street children.

CWCN is providing lodging, food and non-formal education to 40 children in their facilities in addition to the 100s served through their out reach programs. Non-formal education is given to the children for two years. The curriculum covers class1 through 5 in this time period, after which the students matriculate into formal education. Street children have special issues and need to be handled in a careful loving manner before they can settle in a formal classroom environment.

It is generally assumed that poverty is the main reason for the growing number of street children, but we discovered through our visit that domestic conflicts are the number one reason for children to choose such a lonely helpless life. Uneducated parents and step parents through negligence and favoritism drive the children to escape to the streets, drugs and criminal activities.

Through our interaction it was decided that the best way for us to support CWCN was to donate books to their library. CWCN educational philosophy is child centered and they want to use the book both in the classroom and in their lending library. We contributed over 150 new storybooks in English and Nepali, concept books (ABCs etc), biographies, science, activity books and puzzles. All books were cataloged in a way that will allow the organization to keep growing and managing the library. This new concept will help them in their future plans, as they are opening a community school and library.

While teaching the children the proper use and care of the books we were surprised at how well behaved and how interested they were in seeing the bright and colorful books. Coming from the streets the children are not habituated to reading or studying, but they were very happy to learn how to turn the pages correctly without folding, to return them to the shelf in a proper manner and to share and read to each other. All the staff came to the demonstration and we feel that this donation will make a big impact on all members.

Aimed at introducing the good deeds of the Rotary and Rotaract Clubs to those unfamiliar with it and also to create an amiable setting- for corporate houses, Rotarians and Rotaractors to interact with each other and to better personal relations- the event was very well participated in.

The participants at the event were: Buddha Air, Sunrise Bank Pvt. Ltd., Vijay Motors, Everest Bank Pvt. Ltd., Rotary Club of Kantipur and the organizing team of Rotaract Club of Kantipur. All corporate house members arrived at the event on the 23rd of May with a spirit of sportsmanship and with only one rule to play by for the weekend – to indulge in the games and escape from the monotony of urban life.

The participants who had arrived on the 23rd of May had a grand time at the beautifully designed swimming pool and the adjoining house bar at RSR and the riverbank of the gushing waters of the Trishuli. The beverages saw a steady flow as the corporate house members settled into their new environment. The swimming pool saw a crowd eager to soak away their worries in its clear blue waters.

The evening of the 23rd of May ended with an informal orientation program for the participants to welcome them and brief them on the weekend’s itinerary. A sumptuous dinner followed the program with the evening carrying on late into the wee hours of the morning.

The following day as Rotaract members readied the banks of Trishuli Rivers, team members got ready for the game. The game was organized as a league-cum-knockout tournament. Each game comprised of three quarters of seven minutes each with five players on each team. Each team was required to have at least three substitute players. The sand field was readied for the game complying with international standards.

Baring the harsh sun and the warm sands of the river bank, the games continued till one in the afternoon. The games started with Vijay Motors playing against Buddha Air, followed by Sunrise Bank vs. Rotaract Club of Kantipur, Everest Bank vs. Vijay Motors, Rotaract Club of Kantipur vs. its parent Rotary Club of Kantipur, Buddha Air vs. Everest Bank and Rotary Club of Kantipur vs. Sunrise Bank. The winners in the games were Buddha Air, Sunrise Bank, Everest Bank, Rotaract Club of Kantipur, Buddha Air, Sunrise Bank and Buddha Air respectively.

The finals saw the two best teams of the six with the highest number of goals scored; the first Corporate Beach Football winner Buddha Air and Sunrise Bank vying for this year’s Corporate Beach Football cup. The game saw a much appreciated downpour as participants battled it out for the twenty one minutes of game time to score more goals. A competitive final game gave way to Buddha Air gaining a comfortable lead to become the defending champions of the tournament.

The day ended formally with a ceremony to distribute certificates of participation to all participants, medals for the top two teams and a huge, gleaming cup for the winners, Buddha Air. A friendly competition, all participants thoroughly enjoyed the event and were extremely supportive of the Club’s endeavors. Overall, the event served its purpose well as the participants and the organizers both left the premises with smiles all around.

There were numerous sponsors for the event and Rotaract Club of Kantipur thanks them all for their support and sporting participation. Special mention goes to Riverside Spring Resort, Kurintar for their amazing hospitality and managing skills of the friendly staff.

• The Rotaract Club of Berkeley, California, USA, hosts an annual “bone marrow-thon” registration for potential bone marrow donors, in cooperation with the Rotary Club of Berkeley. Every year, hundreds of UC-Berkeley students register by providing a cheek swab.
• Rotaractors in Alexandria, Egypt, started the Beautiful Minds project to provide income-generating materials to 28 underprivileged families with mentally challenged children. They’re also working to raise awareness of mental disabilities in the community.
• The Rotaract Club of Chicago partnered with the Rotaract Club of Panama to provide the village of Bajo Bonito with a 3,000-gallon water tank and service connections to village households. The Chicago Rotaractors traveled to Panama to work with local Rotaractors on the project.

In Nepal, Rotaract Club of Kantipur, celebrated the occasion on a smaller scale but as creatively by organizing a Sports Week inviting all registered Rotaract Clubs in Nepal to participate. The venue was Little Angels School in Hattiban in Kathmandu. An enthusiastic turnout of Rotaract Clubs from all over the valley allowed the originally one week celebrations to extend to a whole month. The games played were football, badminton, basketball and table tennis.
There were 11 tams competing for first place in football. The teams were the Rotaract Clubs of Jawalakhel, Thamel, Himalaya Patan, Tripureshwor, Patan, Kathmandu West, Lalitpur, Pashupati, Yala, New Road City and Dillibazaar. The finals of the game saw Himalaya Patan and New Road City wrestle it out under a terrific summer’s sun on Little Angels’ School’s football ground. In the end, Himalaya Patan succeeded in toppling over New Road City to win the game 2-1.

Simultaneously, badminton saw a huge turnout too with 32 participants in the boys’ singles category, 25 in the girls’ singles category, 14 teams in the boys’ doubles category and eight teams in the girls’ doubles category.

By far and large however, table tennis was the biggest draw in sports week with a total of 61 participants in the boys’ singles category alone. And it sure seemed like the boys had been practicing, with some really professional looking shots served much to the watching crowd’s delight. In the end, Rtr. Anesh Maharjan of Rotaract Club of Himalaya Patan won prevailed over Rtr. Sushil Thapa of Rotaract Club of Dillibazaar. The boys’s double category for table tennis saw 12 teams and the girls’ double saw 13 teams.

The basketball games were played from the 15th to the 31st of March. There were a total of six teams, namely Rotaract Clubs of the host Kantipur, Jawalakhel, Kupondole, Kathmandu Metro and Bagmati. Played at the basketball court in Kathmandu College of Management in Satdobato, the games were very well attended with crowds of people present despite the odd shower of rain to support their respective teams. Rotaractors from all six teams displayed great skill as well as sportsmanship. Great shots were taken by players from all sides with a couple receiving deserving colorful comments from the animated audience. At the end however, the organizing teams of Rotaract Club of Kathmandu took a comfortable lead of 71-50 over Rotaract Club of Thamel.

All games were played following the spirit of sportsmanship and Rotaract fellowship and although there was plenty of testosterone flying around when the games were on, all of it was directed to healthy competition. Special mention goes to Rtr. Suges Ranjit of Roatarct Club of Kathmandu for being instrumental in the planning, execution and eventual success of the club’s Sports Week. Bravo!

The center is a small bungalow which is currently home to thirty amazing children and their caretakers. From little kids to teenagers, the sense of family amongst them lent us a necessary reality check. The way the whole family is living in harmony despite their very modest lifestyle is something the politicians in Nepal can learn a lesson from.

Rotaract Club had organized a fun evening full of fun games, a singing competition, a dance competition and also a painting competition. After set ups were completed, the program started to see a steady flow of visitors eager to support the club in its endeavor. Altogether besides the cheering kids, 56 guests from the District Council as well as other Rotaract Clubs allowed the children to feel as if they were really performing for an audience. The program finally started at around 5 in the evening and went on until 7.

The evening was preceded by a small meal contributed from the organizing team. Stomachs full, the children cheered a hearty cheer announcing they all wanted to win prizes in all the events organized. Heart rending melodies, pulsating dances, side splitting games and truly awe-inspiring paintings made the evening memorable for all present. After the prizes were distributed, every one of the children was presented with stationeries and sweets putting a smile on every face.

A photo session with all the children ended the night. Despite all their problems, the smiles on the children’s faces and their optimistic look on life amazed us all. Blessed are they with their attitudes.
